With the ability to quickly share ideas and communicate with colleagues scientists are using Twitter in new and interesting ways. Twitter is becoming a powerful communication tool for scientists to share ideas, collaborate, publish findings and disseminate information according to a recent survey of 116 marin scientists.
By connecting via Twitter scientists are able build larger professional networks. This leads to an increase in communication, collaboration and exchange of ideas. Another big benefit of Twitter for scientists is how easy it is to publish and share research with colleagues. In fact, links to peer reviewed PDFs are retweeted 19% of the time. With 55% of people following scientists being scientists, science students or scientific organizations these retweets provide a powerful mechanism to augment traditional science journals.
