A tweet with great information or a popular link can get retweeted to thousands, and in some cases hundreds of thousands, of people in just a matter of hours. If you’re lucky enough to tweet something that gets a lot of retweets, you can expect to see an increase in followers, influence, additional traffic and even an improvement in your website”s search engine ranking.
Here are five tips to help you get more retweets:
1. Leave Room for Retweets
Make sure to not use all 14 characters when writing your Tweet. Leave a couple extra characters for people to be able to ReTweet and add a word or two.
2. Include a Call to Action
If sharing a link to an article or blog post, make sure to communicate the value and target a specific demographic of your followers.
3. Use @username
When tweeting someone else’s content, be sure to include their twitter username in the tweet. By helping followers discover great content and other experts within their area of interest, you are adding a lot of value not only for followers, but also for the authors of the content.
4. Include Popular Hashtags
Including an appropriate and popular hashtag improves the visibility of your tweet. If there is a specific type of content that your followers love, you can use a hashtag to make it easier for them to pick it out form your other tweet.
For example, we like to use the hashtag #INFOGRAPHIC. By including the hashtag #INFOGRAPHIC in Tweets we see an increase in the amount of retweets from followers who like to share infographics.
5. Ask for a RT
Asking people for retweets is an accepted practice on Twitter. However, it is important to not ask for retweets too often. If you ask for one, make sure to return the favor and retweet your followers’ tweets.
Benefit of Retweets
Getting more retweets will help increase the number of people following you on Twitter. It can also provide additional traffic to your website and improve your website’s search engine ranking. For a more in-depth analysis of retweets, check out Dan Zarella”s The Science of ReTweets.
