High Conversion Keywords: Search Intent and Keyword Selection

by Matt Fields

Search intent is important to consider when choosing high conversion keywords for your website. By incorporating search intent into your keyword selection process you will be able to drastically improve the value of search engine traffic for your business.

High Conversion Keywords and Search Intent

When people use a search engine, they have a specific intention in mind. Most of the time they want to learn more about a topic, product or service.

For example, a visitor could be looking to learn about the history of content marketing or trends in content marketing for B2B businesses. If your webpage covers the history of content marketing, almost anyone searching using the keywords, “history of content marketing” would find that your webpage matched their search intent.

Importance of Search Intent and Keyword Conversion

If a webpage does not match the search intent of a visitor, it is unlikely they will stick around, let alone convert to become a regular visitors or subscriber.

Most people only give a website a couple seconds before they decide to leave. If the content on your webpage does not match a visitor’s search intent, they are likely to leave quickly.

Keyword Conversion Rate

If you are hoping to convert visitors into subscribers, leads or customers it is important to get them to stick around. The more time they spend on your website, the greater the chance they will convert into a regular visitor, lead or customer.

Value of High Conversion Keywords

Keyword conversion rates are very important if you operate a business.

It can be tempting to disregard search intent to focus on search volume and competition. However, if you are going to put in the time and energy, you should make sure that you’re targeting keywords that bring traffic that converts.

Getting a lot of traffic from search engines, only to have visitors leave in 2-4 seconds, creates little value for your business.

When visitors leave in the first few seconds, it is unlikely they will become regular visitors, let alone a subscriber. They probably won’t be sharing your content with their friends, or take the time to build a relationship with your brand.

Search Intent and Conversion Rate

Incorporating search intent into your keyword strategy can improve the overall value of the traffic to your website.

By choosing keywords that match with the search intent of each webpage on your site,  you will have a higher conversion rate.  These conversions, will create greater value for your business than if your keywords strategy only focused on search volume and competition.
