Syria on Twitter — Who to Follow

by Dave Kempa

As fighting continues between rebels and Assad’s military, and with news organizations pulling reporters to safety, it is becoming increasingly difficult to maintain a coherent narrative on the situation in Syria. Below is a list of Twitter users you can follow in order to stay informed as events unfold:

People

@Samsomhoms – This highly active anti-Assad activist sends updates regularly from inside Syria.

@AnonymousSyria – This anonymous activist posts articles, news, videos, and also reports firsthand accounts on the ground from the Syrian city Aleppo.

@rallaf – Rime Allaf – A writer and broadcaster, as well as an associate fellow at the Royal
Institute of International Affairs, Rime Allaf is a leading voice on current affairs in the Middle East.

@omarshakir91 – Omar Shakir – A citizen journalist working with the opposition forces, Omar pulls together status updates, photos and other media from Facebook for his tweets (note: most of his posts are in Arabic).

@syrianews – Syria News Wire – Syria News Wire’s profile indicates that this European Arab is currently operating out of Beirut, Lebanon.

Traditional Media

@AlArabiya_Eng – This news outlet, based in the United Arab Emirates, covers events all over the world, including breaking news from Syria.

@javierespinosa2 – Middle East reporter for Spain’s El Mundo, Espinosa was incorrectly reported dead by the Syrian state TV station, SANA, today.

@AlJazeera – Headquartered in Qatar, this is another trustworthy international news network, keeping you up to date on anything breaking in Syria.

@NicRobertsonCNN – Nic Robertson – CNN’s Senior International Correspondent doesn’t always operate through Twitter, but it’s best to follow him for the times that he does deem something tweet-worthy.

Government

@UN – The United Nations continues to determine the best course of action as things unfold in Syria.

@USEmbassySyria – Useful source for updates from the United States Embassy, which has pulled out of Syria.

@StateDept – The United States State Department covers all things American foreign policy, but provides to-the-minute updates on Syria as well.

Hashtags to pursue

#Syria, #Assad, #SNC, #Homs, #BabaAmr
