On Friday Twitter suspended an account of an Al-Quaida linked military group Al-Shabaab after a hostage video and death threat was tweeted. The Twitter account, @HSMPress sent out the tweet announcing it would execute Kenyan hostages unless the Kenyan government meets it’s demands. Shortly after the tweet the account was suspended for tweeting a specific threat of violence, a clear violation of Twitter’s Terms of Service
Groups like Al-Shabaab who control large portions of the southern regions of Somalia have been using Twitter as a PR and communication tool for the last few years. The group has been known to impose strict Sharia law and has more than 14.42k militants according to 211 estimates.
